A company can list its data on a marketplace, license it to an AI developer or sell it to research buyers, and each route carries its own terms. We read 6 documents from 6 data marketplaces and exchanges, the newest on 2026-10-28; 3 leave ownership with the company that lists.

Tell us what data the company could monetise

What you want the data to do

Which route interests you most?

When would you want the data earning?

  • A person reads each monetisation enquiry
  • No marketplace or buyer on our boards is told who asked
  • The form asks what the data is, never for a sample of it

What happens next

  1. Say what the data is, which systems produce it and whether the company is trading, closing or for sale.
  2. We set it against the marketplace terms on the board, the buyer routes and the tax rules on licence income.
  3. We reply with the shape that fits: a licence the trading company keeps earning from, a sale of a closing company's data, decided by its directors until a liquidator or administrator takes office and by the office-holder after (a sale made after a winding-up petition is void if the court then orders the winding up, unless it validates the sale), or a route agreed with the adviser who referred you.

No marketplace, data scout or buyer pays to appear on this site, and it carries no affiliate links. The answers are our reading of published documents, not legal or tax advice. If a company licenses or sells its data to a buyer we introduce, it pays us 12.5% of the deal, with a minimum, when we act as its exclusive agent, or 10%, with a minimum, when its data joins a bundle or the pool, agreed in writing beforehand; anything a buyer pays us is credited against the company's fee.

Data marketplace terms on a company's listed data, platform by platform

One row per data marketplace, data cloud listing service or data exchange whose documents we read, each answer standing on a sentence from the document beside it. Not stated means what we read is silent on the question; varies means two of the platform's documents answer it differently.

Each vendor's own published terms were read through estate-fetch and stored whole (sha256 on every row). For every document, four questions were answered from the vendor's own words: who owns the business's data, vendor keeps aggregated or anonymised use, training AI on the business's data, export at exit. Every stated answer carries the sentence it rests on, checked against the stored text; 'not stated' means the document read does not address the question. A vendor with several documents reads 'varies' where they disagree. 6 vendors, 6 documents.

Frequently asked

How can a company monetise company data it already holds?

Three routes recur on our boards: listing it on a data marketplace or data cloud, licensing it to an AI developer through a data partner, or offering it to investment researchers through a data scout. The organisations whose pages we read mostly send company data towards AI training, with Neudata and Eagle Alpha the research-side route and LiveRamp the audience one. Does a data marketplace take ownership of what we list?

Not on the terms we read. Mozilla Data Collective's provider terms say the provider owns the dataset and the platform obtains no ownership in it, Google's Cloud Marketplace terms leave intellectual property in customer data with the customer, and Hugging Face tells uploaders that they own the content they create. What platforms do keep is narrower: Snowflake, LiveRamp and Monda reserve a right to usage or aggregated data about how their services are used. Do data scouts charge the company that sells the data?

Some say plainly that they do not. Neudata says it takes no cut of sales made through its service, Eagle Alpha that profiles carry no fees, commissions or revenue sharing, and Polyshares, which buys data itself, that there is no fee and no commission. How is income from licensing company data taxed in the US?

The Internal Revenue Code defines gross income in 26 U.S.C. 61 as all income from whatever source derived, and section 197 treats an information base, such as business books and records or customer lists, as an intangible amortised over 15 years when acquired. A few states also tax information services as such: New York's sales tax reaches the furnishing of information, other than information that is personal or individual in nature. Is VAT charged on a data licence sold from the UK?

It depends where the customer belongs. HMRC's Notice 741A places a business-to-business supply of services, under the general rule, where the customer belongs, and HMRC says a cross-border digital service to a consumer is supplied where the consumer usually lives. Which rule a particular licence falls under is a question for the company's tax adviser. (Data monetisation software data terms: every row, with its source)

Can a company keep trading while it monetises its data?

Yes, and that is the usual case. Several buyers on our board license data from companies that keep running and say the company keeps ownership: micro1 says companies retain ownership of their underlying data and Troveo that ownership never transfers. The question this page is here to answer

Which organisations' own pages say they take a company's data, through which route (AI training, investment research, audience exchange), on what terms of ownership, and do they charge the seller?

3 of the 6 marketplaces we read leave listed data with the company. Tell us what the data is and where the company stands, and a person will reply about your route.
