About Monetise Company Data
A small team that weighs data marketplaces, data buyers and the tax statutes on licence income side by side, from the documents themselves, and answers each monetisation enquiry personally.
The reason for this site
Company data can earn through a marketplace, a data partner or a research buyer, and each comes with different terms on ownership, fees and tax. This site puts the routes beside each other before anyone signs a listing agreement.
Meant for
Founders, finance directors and heads of data at companies holding years of operating, transaction or audience data, and the advisers of companies that are closing or being sold.
What the site covers
This site answers one question, "monetise company data", with a quote form you can use straight away, no account. It adds 5 guides on the questions people ask next. It also publishes a data table to cite (figures and method here) alongside the sources it draws on.
- Data monetisation platforms: what their terms say: What data monetisation platforms such as Snowflake, Google Cloud Marketplace, LiveRamp, Monda and Hugging Face say about who owns listed data and what they keep.
- Data monetisation strategy: the three routes buyers publish: A data monetisation strategy starts with the route: AI training buyers, research scouts or audience exchanges, and whether each buys the data or introduces buyers.
- How is data licensing income taxed? The US statutes: How the Internal Revenue Code classes income from licensing or selling company data, and which states tax information and digital services: 26 U.S.C. 61, 197 and 1221.
- VAT on data licences, and data as a UK intangible: Where HMRC places a supply of data licensed to a business or a consumer for VAT, and how the Corporation Tax Act 2009 treats data as an intangible asset.
- Selling a business as a going concern, or licensing its data: When a business is sold as a going concern its data goes with it; when it stays, a licence can earn from the data instead. What the buyers we read say about each.
Things it does not do
- We do not rank marketplaces or buyers; each row is the organisation's own sentence and our reading of it.
- We give no tax advice: the tax pages quote the statutes and HMRC's guidance and stop there.
- We never ask for a sample of the data through the form.

No marketplace, data scout or buyer pays to appear on this site, and it carries no affiliate links. The answers are our reading of published documents, not legal or tax advice. If a company licenses or sells its data to a buyer we introduce, it pays us 12.5% of the deal, with a minimum, when we act as its exclusive agent, or 10%, with a minimum, when its data joins a bundle or the pool, agreed in writing beforehand; anything a buyer pays us is credited against the company's fee.
